Man-Of-Da-House

A 10 year old came in by EMS in with a severe asthma exacerbation. Lets call him Man-Of-Da-House. He was accompanied by his 7 year old sister. They had been home alone all day, and little sis called 911 when Man-Of-Da-House was having a really hard time breathing.

It took 3 hours to find mom. She strolled in the ER like it was no big deal. No she was not at work during the ordeal. The kids looked 5 years younger than their actual age. I think b/c they are probably neglected.

Man-Of-Da-House wasn't getting much better, so we had to transfer him to a children's hospital. Most moms will do whatever to stay with their child when they are being admitted and definitely transferred. This one didn't...she said she was going home to change clothes. Poor little Man-Of-Da-House was transferred in an ambulance to a different hospital all alone. He looked terrified

I was livid. I was a Man-Of-Da-House myself....but at least my mom gave a shit.

Poor guy. :-(

And twenty years later these moms wonder why their babies don't call for christmas. Or any occasion, really.

I would be so incredibly pissed off at that woman. Poor little man.
I hope he was getting lots of love and hugs from staff, since his own Mom was so cold. God...I would want to slap her.

The worse part is the 7 year old probably got her ass beat for involving the authorities.

*smack* "What the hell is wrong with you? I told you if he gets like that, he's supposed to use that #*$+#!! puffer thing. Don't know where it's at? Whatever. I get called back from the casino/booty call/drug house for this trifling BS? I'm going back out. You can figure out what you can make for dinner."

I know the scenario too well. My mom and dad had all the parenting skills of a lower level reptile.

I have to say, if I had been the RN present when the mom said she was going home to change clothes, the two of us would have had a come to jesus meeting......hopefully the children's hospital can get social services involved (although I'm sure that environment wouldn't be much better :(

Watched a Tv programme last week about a ski area here in Europe and injuries. The one that absolutely got me was the one where a German 10 year old was left with her 12 year old sister, otherwise alone, on a ski piste. The 10 year old tried a small jump built on the edge of the piste and - of course - fell on landing. A passing couple, on a walk, stopped to help and called the paramedics who decided there was a risk of spinal injury so she had to be helicoptered to the big hospital in Innsbruck. The parents were nowhere to be found - I wasn't sure which of the kids to be most sorry for. This is the day of the mobile phone - and the kids didn't have one, nor did they know where their parents were. Never mind they shouldn't have ever been left alone. I suspect the Austrian police will have had something to say - I certainly hope they did.

That makes me want to bitch-slap self-involved mommy into next week. That is just terrible. Please take a few moments to clue the children's hospital in (though they'll probably figure it out right quickly).

"Change clothes?"

My parents didn't leave me for over 24 hours the last time I was hospitalized...and I was in my late teens!

Please tell me you reported your suspicions to someone...

Suspicions be da#$ed. I do not believe that it is legal to leave children of those ages unsupervised at home. Reporting is mandatory.

i was terrifed to leave my son alone for more than 15 minutes until he was about 11 or 12...and that was to dash to the store.....

(Don't remind him!) ;)

she should definitely be reported. too young to be alone. thank goodness for the kids they seem as responsible as possible for their ages.

Let's not forget good ole Dad. Where was he?

Just curious, did you find out if the 10yr old was okay after being transferred?

Horrendous story.

My dad came to the emergency room when I blew out my knee 3 weeks ago, and I'm 39.

I tried to get him not to come and leave immediately when he got there, but he refused to leave until the x-rays came back clear.

Anywhere will be better than with this parent. I won't call her a mother because she doesn't deserve that term of endearment.
